A COVID-19 TAX TIP FROM MR TAXMAN #11

Apr 08, 2020

The ATO yesterday released some information around claiming Home Office expenses during this period with the headline being an 80 cent per hour shortcut method if you don’t want to go to the hassle of calculating your actual expenditure that you are incurring for working from home.

Just like accountants do each year with claiming car expenses (cents per kilometre versus the log book method), I encourage all individuals to keep a record of their actual spend plus a log of their hours at home and a one month log of their phone & internet usage and let your trusted taxman work out the best method to claim for you.

I think we all understand how much every $ counts in this environment so don’t get lazy and simply accept the shortcut method. It could cost you $$$.
